Stopovers - ETHIOPIA. Mekele

At an altitude of 2060 metres, capital of Tigray, Mekele batches together an Orthodox, Catholic roman and Moslem population. The Tigray and the Afar people exchange there during an important market on Mondays. An uncountable and colorful crowd hurries up in a labyrinth of alleys, workshops and women negotiating on tortuous ranges of fiber mats, or on sacking and plastic clothes.

Mekele welcomes the salt caravans which come back up from the Danakil.
