Stopovers - ETHIOPIA. Dallols salt mines

In the salted vastness of the lake Karoum, teams of Afar salt workers are exploiting delimited salt quarries, under a pitiless sun and a blinding reverberation.

In this men and animals hive of activity, workmen with hierarchical specialities, convicts by need, cut out enormous salt plates, lift them up with wooden piles out of another age; some hew them to gauged slabs, using curious y-shaped tools, others attach the invaluable goods to the sides of the dromedaries and the asses, after having awaited their turn, dozing in the shade of an animal.
